Graduate Assistantships

Graduate teaching and research assistantships are available in most departments for highly qualified graduate students. Assistantships provide students to work on campus. There are three primary areas where graduate assistants work:

1. as teaching assistants
2. as research assistants
3. as general assistance in offices on campus.

Applications for assistantships should be filed with the chairman of the department of the student’s major field of interest no later than May 1 prior to fall enrollment, October 1 prior to spring enrollment, and March 1 prior to summer sessions. Please refer to the Graduate Bulletin for specifics regarding grade point average and course load requirements for graduate assistants.  A limited number of applications are kept on file in the Office of Graduate Studies for departments seeking general assistance.  These assistantships are offered on an as needed basis.

Teaching assistants work closely with the faculty and assist with the management and grading of undergraduate course materials. However, if the teaching assistant has successfully completed (a minimum of) 18 graduate hours in the discipline, they may be asked to teach courses or labs under the supervision of a faculty member. Graduate research assistants are typically assigned to a faculty member and assist with the gathering or analysis of information and data on original research projects. Graduate assistants assigned to departments and offices on campus provide general assistance as needed. Typically, graduate assistants work 15 to 20 hours per week.

In addition to earning a stipend for work, non-resident graduate assistants receive a tuition reduction since they may be charged the equivalent of in-state tuition during the semesters in which they are actively employed. A student who has, or will have an approved graduate assistantship may request an in-state equivalency for one summer during his/her graduate career. Assistantships may only be awarded to an individual student for a maximum of four semesters (excluding summers). Stipends for assistantships may vary in amount by department.

Graduate assistants are expected to familiarize themselves with university policies and to fulfill their professional responsibilities to the university. An applicant for a graduate assistantship must be admitted to a graduate program as a degree-seeking student and enrolled in graduate courses during the semester of employment.
